Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatments

Snoring Prevention

Snoring is a common problem that affects more than 80 million people in North America. It not only disrupts the quality of sleep for the person snoring but also impacts their loved ones and family members. Chronic snoring can also be a sign of other major health complications. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available for chronic snoring, including laser therapy.

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring can result from several factors. Typically, it is caused by the relaxation of muscles and soft tissues in the throat and mouth, which narrows the airway. This makes it harder for each breath to pass through, causing vibrations in the soft tissues that result in the snoring sound. Other causes of snoring may include:

  • Excess body weight
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Certain sleep aids or sedatives
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Treatments

Laser Therapy for Snoring

Laser therapy for snoring is a non-invasive medical procedure that uses a laser to reduce or eliminate snoring. The laser is directed at the back of the throat, specifically the uvula and soft palate, to heat the tissue, causing it to shrink and stiffen. This reduces the amount of tissue that vibrates during breathing, which is the main cause of snoring.

How is Laser Therapy Performed?

Laser therapy for snoring is typically performed at our dental office and does not require general anesthesia. A local anesthetic is applied to numb the back of the throat, and then the laser is directed at the target tissue. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.

Effectiveness of Laser Therapy

The effectiveness of laser therapy for snoring varies from person to person. Some individuals may require multiple treatments to achieve the desired results. However, laser therapy is generally considered a safe and effective option for individuals who snore due to excess tissue in the throat.

Considerations

It is important to note that laser therapy for snoring is not a permanent solution, and snoring may return over time as the tissue in the throat continues to relax and lose stiffness. As with any medical procedure, it is essential to discuss the potential risks and benefits of laser therapy for snoring with your dentist before undergoing treatment.

Mandibular Advancement Device

A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is another effective treatment for snoring. This specially designed dental device helps keep the lower jaw, or mandible, in a forward position, increasing the airway space and aiding in better breathing. This can lead to a full, quiet night's sleep. Some devices also prevent the tongue from falling back over the windpipe. Your dentist can fit these special appliances to suit your individual condition.

Is a MAD Comfortable?

Yes, a MAD is designed to be comfortable so that you can sleep without even noticing you’re wearing it. It does not prevent you from breathing with your mouth open and can even eliminate snoring for patients with sinus congestion or allergies. You may experience some slight jaw stiffness for the first few mornings after wearing the device, but this feeling is temporary and will go away after you wake up and remove the device.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

Do you snore? Are you often tired or sleepy during the day? Have you ever been told you stop breathing while you sleep?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea.

OSA has been linked to excessive tiredness, depression, and reduced resistance to infection. When left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of heart attack, hypertension, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, catching colds, and even death. It can have a significant impact on quality of life, placing unnecessary strain on relationships between bed partners, family, and the work place.

If you have OSA or display symptoms of OSA such as loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and witnessed apneas, it is essential that you seek the right treatment option. Ask our office if SomnoDent is right for you.
